  • Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins love warmth and space. Sow seeds indoors into small pots using peat-free organic potting compost, keeping temperatures at 20°C or above for good germination. Sow seeds point-side down, about 1.5-2cm deep, and keep evenly moist.

Grow plants on in good light, then harden off and plant out once all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 90-120cm apart. Water well during dry spells and allow fruits to fully mature on the vine.

Sow indoors: April to early June

Plant out: Late May to July

    Harvesting time: September to October

  • Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins are as good in the kitchen as they are on the doorstep. The sweet, thick orange-yellow flesh is perfect for soups, casseroles, stews, and curries, and roasts beautifully in wedges or chunks.

The flesh also shines in baking. Roast and purée it for muffins, brownies, tray bakes, pancakes, and classic pumpkin pies. Any extra purée freezes well, making this a great pumpkin for cooking right through the winter.
