Crown Prince pumpkins love warmth and space. Sow seeds indoors into small pots using peat-free organic potting compost, keeping temperatures at 20°C or above for good germination. Sow seeds point-side down, about 1.5-2cm deep, and keep evenly moist.
Grow plants on in good light, then harden off and plant out once all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 90-120cm apart. Water well during dry periods and allow fruits to fully mature on the vine for the best flavour and storage.
Sow indoors: April to early June
Plant out: Late May to July
Harvesting time: September to October

Crown Prince is often described as the queen of winter squashes, celebrated by chefs worldwide and frequently placed at the centre of winter menus. The dense, sweet, nutty flesh holds its shape beautifully, making it ideal for roasting, soups, curries, stews, and even pickles or warm salads.
It roasts exceptionally well in wedges. We love it with chilli flakes, lemon, garlic, and a sage butter crust, served warm with fresh buffalo ricotta or a sharp, crumbly cheese. It’s equally at home in risottos, grain bowls, and baked dishes, both savoury and sweet.
