Tropaeolum majus

Nasturtium Black Velvet is a striking heirloom variety with deep, velvety maroon-black flowers set against lush green foliage. Easy to grow and highly ornamental, it’s also a brilliant companion plant, attracting bees and beneficial insects while helping to draw pests away from the vegetable garden.

Like all nasturtiums, the leaves, flowers, and young seed pods are edible, with a fresh, peppery flavour similar to watercress. Perfect for pots, borders, hanging baskets, or weaving through vegetable beds, Black Velvet thrives in poorer soils and rewards minimal effort with dramatic colour.

Average number of seeds: 25

Open-pollinated, chemical-free seeds. Grown and saved in Wexford, Ireland. We only grow and save seeds from plants that were started from certified organic seeds.

Each seed packet includes growing tips and cooking suggestions inside.

  • Nasturtiums are very easy to grow and ideal for beginners. Sow seeds directly where they are to flower, or into pots using peat-free organic compost. Choose a sunny position and sow seeds about 2-3 cm deep. Water gently and keep soil just moist until germination.

Nasturtiums prefer poorer soils and do best without feeding, which encourages flowering rather than leafy growth. Suitable for pots, borders, hanging baskets, or trailing through the vegetable patch.

    Sow: March to August

Plant out: Not required if sown directly

    Flowering time: May to November

  • Nasturtium leaves and flowers have a fresh, peppery flavour similar to watercress. The dark petals of Black Velvet look especially striking scattered through salads, sandwiches, and summer dishes.

The young green seed pods can be pickled and used like capers - an old kitchen-garden favourite that adds a sharp, savoury note to salads, pasta, and fish dishes.
