Cucumis sativus

Cucumber Marketmore is a classic, reliable variety known for its heavy cropping and excellent performance in cooler climates. Well suited to Irish growing conditions, it can be grown outdoors or in a polytunnel or glasshouse and shows good resistance to common cucumber diseases.

Plants produce long, dark green fruits with slightly prickly skin, a crisp texture, and a mild, refreshing flavour. Vigorous vines can climb up to 3 metres and are best grown with support, making this an ideal choice for vertical growing in small spaces.

Average number of seeds: 14

Open-pollinated, chemical-free seeds. Grown and saved in Wexford, Ireland. We only grow and save seeds from plants that were started from certified organic seeds.

Each seed packet includes growing tips and cooking suggestions inside.

  • For best germination, maintain a temperature of 18–20 °C. Sow seeds on their sides, 2.5 cm deep, in small pots filled with peat-free organic compost. Keep compost moist but not waterlogged.

Plant out 50 cm apart once all risk of frost has passed. Cucumbers can be grown undercover or outdoors from late May in a sunny, sheltered spot. Provide support such as strings, canes, or netting, as plants are vigorous climbers. Water regularly and harvest fruits young to encourage continuous cropping.

    Sow indoors: March to May

Plant out: Late May to July

    Harvesting time: July to October

  • Marketmore cucumbers are crisp and refreshing, perfect for salads, sandwiches, and pickles. They’re also delicious lightly smashed with sea salt, garlic, and vinegar, or sliced into chilled soups and summer drinks.

For something different, try cucumbers lightly sautéed with spices or added to warm dishes, where their freshness balances heat and richness. We love making a quick Asian cucumber salad seasoned with garlic, soy, sesame, rice wine vinegar, and chilli oil.
