Cape Gooseberry Giant Seeds
Physalis Peruviana
Originating from South America, this is a large-fruiting cape gooseberry. The plants can grow 2 to 4 feet tall and produce many jewel-like, golden-orange berries surrounded by a papery husk. When ripe, they have a citrusy, tart-sweet taste. They are usually grown as an annual but can be perennial if protected from frost winter.

The temperature must be at least 18C to ensure the best germination. Fill small modular trays with peat-free seed compost. Plant 50cm apart. Can be grown undercover or outside from late May to avoid frosts. Grow them up a string or support them with bamboo.
Sow indoors: February to April
Plant out: Late May to July
Harvest: August to November

As well as making an attractive garnish, they can be used in pies, puddings and ice cream. Delicious as a jam, jelly or chutney with cheese and cold meats. We love making a cape gooseberry curd with them and serving it on a crunchy-sweet Pavlova.
