One of the first fruit trees planted in our garden was a Merryweather damson — a variety once widely grown and loved across Ireland and the UK. Some consider it closer to a plum due to its generous size, but for us, it is unmistakably a damson: blue-black skin with a soft bloom, greenish-yellow flesh, and that distinctive astringent bite that defines its character.
Our damsons are grown for flavour, not yield. Each season, we preserve them in different ways — jams, cordials, syrups, umeboshi-style pickles, and even a Christmas plum pudding — but they are perhaps most famously paired with gin.
