Cucurbita Maxima

A French heirloom winter squash with a distinctive round knobbly cap, mottled with shades of orange, red, white, and green. They are quite ornamental, but the golden-orange flesh is moist, sweet and nutty. One vine can produce lots of fruit, weighing up to 2 kilos each.

Average number of seeds: 8

Open-pollinated chemical-free seeds. Grown and saved in Wexford, Ireland. We only grow and save seeds from plants that were started from certified organic seeds.

Our seed packet includes growing tips and suggestions for cooking.

  • To ensure the best germination, the temperature must be at least 20C. Sow the seed point-side down 1.5cm deep in small pots in peat-free compost. Plant outdoors 90cm apart from late May to avoid frosts.

    Sow indoors: April to early June

    Plant outdoors: Late May to July

    Harvesting time: September to October

  • This squash has a fantastic nutty hazelnut flavour. It is ideal for stuffing. It can also be used in soups, stews or curries.

    To add some drama to your winter cooking, we love stuffing this squash with various ingredients like mince, rice and lentils and serving it in the middle of the table.
