Nigella Apple Mango Chutney

from €12.50

Inspired by the bold flavours of traditional Indian mango chutney, our Nigella Apple Mango Chutney celebrates three exceptional ingredients: our Nigella seeds, Gibbons Russet apples, and organic Osteen mangoes from our adopted trees in Spain. It also features other spices from our garden, our own apple cider vinegar, aged lime pickle (a Madhur Jaffrey recipe), and organic apple syrup from our friends at Highbank Orchards in Kilkenny.

Anthony is especially excited to showcase Nigella Sativa, also known as black cumin, black caraway, Kalonji, or black onion seed. This aromatic seed adds a unique depth of flavour with hints of onion, oregano, black pepper, and a nutmeg-like warmth. It brings a subtle yet complex spice to the chutney. Native to Asia and the Middle East, Nigella Sativa belongs to the same family as Nigella Damascena (known as 'Love in a Mist'), a flower commonly found in traditional Irish cottage gardens. While Nigella Sativa is grown for its seeds, Nigella Damascena is prized for its beautiful blue flowers.

The Gibbons Russet apple, an Irish heritage variety preserved by Irish Seed Savers, has been grown for cider in Kilkenny, Cork, and Meath since the 19th century. Its sweet-tangy flavour and russet-streaked skin provide both texture and body to the chutney. The organic Osteen mangoes contribute a rich, tropical floral sweetness and the signature syrupy texture of Indian mango chutney. We source them through the CrowdFarming platform, which connects us directly with small, often second- or third-generation farmers who grow organically along the Mediterranean. This platform allows us to support these farmers while ensuring the highest quality of tropical fruit.

Our aged organic key lime pickle adds a layer of tangy citrus and savoury complexity, balancing the sweetness of the mangoes and apples, and contributing a subtle fermented richness to the chutney.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
