Horseradish Root
Armoracia Rusticana
A robust, low-maintenance perennial that's perfect for any garden. Horseradish is a brilliant crop for homemade sauces, ferments, and condiments – and once you grow your own, you’ll never go back to the bland supermarket stuff again. Hardy, vigorous, and easy to care for, it comes back year after year with minimal effort.
These freshly harvested root cuttings are 3–5 cm long and are ready to plant. We ship them unwashed on the day of dispatch to preserve freshness and ensure strong establishment. While horseradish can be invasive in open soil, planting it in deep pots makes it much easier to harvest in autumn and winter.
When you lift the root, scrub it clean and freeze it whole - then grate from frozen with the skin on
Number of root clippings: 3
Grown to organic standards - we only grow true heritage varieties (no hybrids or GM seeds), using peat-free compost in our garden.

Very easy to grow. Plant root cuttings directly in their final garden spot or in deep pots. Place the roots about 5 cm deep in well-drained, peat-free compost and keep them moist while they establish. For easier harvesting, we recommend growing in deep pots. Roots will establish over summer and can be harvested from late autumn onwards.

Plant: March to July
Harvest: October to March
Flowering (if left to bloom): May to July

Who doesn’t love horseradish? Pungent, peppery, and fiery in all the right ways, fresh horseradish root is in a league of its own. When you lift the root, scrub it clean and freeze it whole — then grate from frozen with the skin on. We love grating it straight into crème fraîche or yoghurt for a simple sauce, stirring it into mashed potatoes, or pairing it with roast beef, oily fish, or smoked mackerel. It’s also fantastic in Bloody Marys, salad dressings, or a punchy homemade horseradish sauce.
