Cucurbita maxima

Turk’s Turban is a classic French heirloom winter squash, instantly recognisable for its dramatic shape and richly coloured cap. The round fruits are topped with a knobbly “turban” and mottled in shades of orange, red, white, and green, making them as ornamental as they are edible.

Beneath the striking skin lies moist, golden-orange flesh with a sweet, nutty flavour. Vigorous vines are highly productive, often yielding multiple fruits per plant, each weighing up to 2 kg. A beautiful and generous squash that brings both flavour and flair to the autumn garden.

Average number of seeds: 8

Open-pollinated, chemical-free seeds. Grown and saved in Wexford, Ireland. We only grow and save seeds from plants that were started from certified organic seeds.

Each seed packet includes growing tips and cooking suggestions inside.

  • Turk’s Turban squash loves warmth, sun, and space. Sow seeds indoors into small pots using peat-free organic potting compost, keeping temperatures at 20°C or above for good germination. Sow seeds point-side down, about 1.5-2cm deep, and keep evenly moist.

Grow plants on in good light, then harden off and plant out once all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 90-120cm apart. Allow vines plenty of room to trail.

Sow indoors: April to early June

Plant out: Late May to July

    Harvesting time: September to October

  • Turk’s Turban is far more than a decorative squash. Beneath its striking skin lies moist, golden-orange flesh with a sweet, nutty flavour often compared to hazelnuts. It roasts beautifully, works well in soups, stews, and curries, and holds its shape nicely when baked.

This squash is especially good for stuffing. We love baking it whole or halved and filling it with spiced mince, rice, lentils, or grains, then bringing it straight to the table as a centrepiece dish - dramatic, generous, and deeply comforting winter cooking.
