Cucamelon Seeds

€4.00

Melothria scabra

Cucamelon, also known as mouse melon or Mexican miniature watermelon, is an old heirloom variety grown for its grape-sized, oval fruits with dark green skin and pale stripes. Botanically, it’s neither a cucumber nor a melon, but a fascinating relative in its own right.

The fruits have a crisp, crunchy texture with a tangier flavour than cucumber, alongside refreshing notes of watermelon and lime. A true garden curiosity, cucamelon grows on slender, climbing vines up to 2 metres tall and is ideal for trellising in polytunnels, greenhouses, or sunny sheltered spots outdoors.

Average number of seeds: 10

Open-pollinated, chemical-free seeds. Grown and saved in Wexford, Ireland. We only grow and save seeds from plants that were started from certified organic seeds.

Each seed packet includes growing tips and cooking suggestions inside.

  • Cucamelons are easy to grow and love warmth. Sow seeds indoors in pots or modular trays using peat-free organic compost. Keep warm and moist until germination, which can take a little time. Grow plants on and plant out once all risk of frost has passed.

Provide support such as a trellis, string, or netting, as plants are vigorous climbers. Cucamelons thrive in a polytunnel or greenhouse but will also grow outdoors in a sunny, sheltered spot.

    Sow indoors: March to May

Plant out: Late May to June

    Harvest: July to October

  • Cucamelons are delicious eaten fresh, straight from the vine. Use them whole in salads, scatter through summer dishes, or serve simply with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil.

They’re excellent pickled like gherkins, added to tacos, or used as a garnish for cocktails and drinks. Their sharp, citrusy bite pairs beautifully with chilli, lime, fresh herbs, and soft cheeses.
